MA Licenses 7-31-25.jpeg

Mass requires electrical work be completed by a licensed electrician and requires permits to be pulled for most electrical work, and can be applied for by a Massachusetts licensed journeyman or a master electrician. When an electrician pulls a permit they must provide a liability certificate or a waiver from the homeowner. A waiver from the homeowner to allow someone to work off the homeowner's insurance policy in our eyes is a very bad idea. One should ask, if hiring an electrician, who does not have their own insurance, why? Why would a homeowner's insurance cover work done by someone? We don't have that answer and can't be sure in the event something happened the insurance company would actually cover damage caused by a person working on the home.

Anyone that hires SMPElectric doesn't need to worry about this as we are fully insured.

The state allows homeowners to perform their own electrical work, but the city or town may decline a permit and inspection, some may say for liability reasons. Homeowner's insurance may not cover work done by a homeowner. Homeowner's cannot and should not perform work on the main electrical service.
